Description
There are a handful of classics to sniff out, though not many of them are listed here. And finding them could take a little bit of walking around. A cheap way to Fly has the old school problems listed. Traditionally this area was laid out as Uptown (Northern half) and Downtown (Southern half). You may see these designations in the problem descriptions.
Getting There
Drive north out of Flagstaff on Highway 180 for about three miles. After passing the Museum of Northern Arizona (which is on the left) look for a right hand turn on to Shultz Pass Road. Take this turn and drive about 1/4 mile to a fork in the road. Take the right and the Y and drive about three and a half miles to the parking area. Approximately two miles of this drive is on pavement and one and a half miles on a well maintained dirt road. Park in a large pull out on the right hand side of the road just before a gate that remains closed. During times of heavy snowfall, the first gate is closed where Elden Lookout Road turns to dirt making it a long trudge to the boulders.
After parking in the upper lot, the boulders are best accessed by hiking up the road and crossing the large drainage. Most of the older trails have been closed after the Museum fire of 2019 and the re-route of the AZT.
