Description
Chimney Rock is a dramatic sandstone dome that is easily identified from the Ghost Rock Rest Area off I-70 looking north. When gazing at the peak, it's hard to believe such an easy route exists. Although there is a bit of a hike to reach the formation and the climbing is easy, the summit views are well worth the effort. On a plus note, you can expect solitude.
Getting There
I highly recommend supplementing these directions with a map, Gazetteer Atlas or GPS. Most of these roads are poorly marked and a high clearance vehicle is highly recommended.
Take Exit 131 off I-70 for Temple Road. Drive south on Temple Mountain Road for 3.9 miles and turn right onto a road just past an information kiosk. Continue another 1.1 mile passing a small stock pond on the right. Merge onto another road and drive 1.7 miles to another intersection. Again, turn right and drive 1.0. Turn right (see the theme? Stay right). After an additional 0.8 mile reach a poorly marked Y junction. Stay right and drive under I-70. Navigation gets tricky due to a labyrinth of roads on the north side of I-70 that lead to Dutchman Arch and The Head of Sinbad.
After passing under I-70 make an immediate left and then an intermediate right. At a T junction, turn left on a road which passes by Dutchman Arch (obvious). Continue past the arch and park at a sign for a closed road that heads west (38.8767, -110.7947).
