Description

This is Addis Ababa’s third developed crag after Amora Gedel and Hyena’s Point.  This is more of a beginner crag about 25 minutes (driving and hiking combined) from the US Embassy. The Craglette is one of four south-facing bands of rock on Entoto, and it is the only band with decent rock in this area.  The Craglette offers varied routes from the same anchor, which is a nice feature to test different techniques.

Anchor Situation: There are bolt anchors atop the left and middle areas.  To set the left line, carefully down climb the rock/vegetated area to reach the rocky outcrop to reach the Metolius bolt anchors (no rap anchors).  To set the middle line, find the tree and down climb about 1 meter and then traverse left to another Metolius bolt anchor.   Use the two trees to set up the right line.

Getting There

Drive past the US Embassy, Shiro Meda, and the Geregesenon sign on Entoto Road en route to Entoto Mountain. After taking a left turn, there will be a straight away and turn right when you see a dirt road. Park under the tree in front of a small rock outcrop about 50 yards/meters (about a 10-15 drive past the US Embassy, depending on traffic in Shiro Meda).

From the parking spot, follow the dirt road about 50 yards/meters and turn left and follow the sheet metal house. Veer right around the housing area and follow a faint path through a clearing with trees.  Follow the trail to a "Y" intersection and go left and follow the more visible trail upward, rather than continuing on the faint trail that veers right.  There will be another visible rock outcrop high up on the left to use as a landmark.  Follow the distinct trail as it zigzags up to the left and then the right; you will be atop a rock terrace at this point.  After a straightaway and a clearing on the left, walk off  to the right for about 20 yards/meters. You have now arrived at the top of the crag. [Map location is extremely approximate].

Local kids may bum rush you as you exit your vehicle and request that you pay them (~20 birr) to watch your car.  As of May 2018, we have not experienced any issues with not paying them.
