Description

This secluded cliff sits down in a cool little drainage at Wild Iris. The cliff has a great atmosphere, fantastic rock, and gets lots of shade. Several of the easy lines are well protected for new leaders.

Here in Wyoming, we share our public lands with hunters, fisherman, and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. The name of this cliff comes from a day in the mountains that turned into an elk packing trip real quick.

Upon walking down the drainage into the trees, we spooked 25 head of elk that took off. We did the FA of "Will's Wapiti," and heard a loud rifle shot shortly after. We walked around the corner, and our good friend Will Balis had just shot his first Wind River bull elk. He had started the day all the way by the Little Popo Agie Canyon and worked his ass off following the herd all the way to Wild Iris. We packed it to the ridge and got it into the truck after about 4 hours of work (Around 12 for Will...). Gotta love when the climbing days turn into something more!

Getting There

Drop down into the drainage from the trail that connects the Erratic and Rising From the Plains wall near a large, rounded tree as seen in the photo. Look for the stacked rocks, and you'll find your way.

A nice shady wall with really great rock quality in a remote setting. 100% recommend checking this crag out. The moderates are much better than many at the OK Corral. Jul 31, 2018
