10 - Taboose, Sawmill & Baxter Passes

California > High Sierra

Description

This area refers to the peaks and climbs most easily accessed by the Baxter, Sawmill and Taboose Pass trails. These trails all gain a huge amount of elevation by starting down in the desert and climbing up and over the Sierra crest, their passes all over 11,000 ft. Starting early is often a must as the trailheads are dry, hot and shadeless. Meanwhile the passes can still hold snow until mid-summer depending on the year. The rewards are stunning scenery, solitude and easier to get permits.

Getting There

All three trailheads start off of Hwy 395 in the Inyo National Forest and enter Kings Canyon National Park as they go over the Sierra crest. Check here for overnight permit information and food storage regulations. This area can also be accessed from the west via Roads End and hiking up Paradise Valley, from Kearsarge Pass and hiking north on the JMT through the Rae Lakes area or even from Bishop Pass and hiking south on the JMT - all of these choices are significantly longer.
