Florence Peak

California > High Sierra > 11 - Great Western &…

Description

Florence Peak sits on the Great Western Divide and is on the border of Sequoia National Park and Sequoia National Forest. Trails pass just west of the peak at Farewell Gap and just east of the peak at Franklin pass. The peak can be approached from the south via trails in Sequoia National Forest but the fastest approach is out of Mineral King (seasonal road usually open from May to October, check here for road conditions). There are several 5th class routes on the north face and a few 2nd/3rd class routes from the southwest and northeast – see the R.J. Secor guide for more info.

If camping overnight in SEKI, a permit is required. Reserve one here and pick it up at the Mineral King ranger station.

Getting There

Mineral King Approach: From the town of Three Rivers on Hwy 198 turn off on the Mineral King Road and drive to the end and park in the lot – bear boxes. Walk back to the east side of the river and hike south past the corrals. Make sure you are on the east side of the river, there is also a trail heading south out of the parking lot on the west side of the river which takes you up the wrong canyon. After 3.5 miles reach a junction and make a left heading towards Franklin Lakes/Franklin Pass if climbing the northeast ridge or the 5th class routes on the north face. Otherwise head straight towards Farewell Gap and Bullfrog Lakes to climb the peak from the southwest.
