Getting weather forecast...

Description

Up to 10 years of development, there is bouldering, sport climbing and trad. There are up to 10 areas that I have heard of so far. Topos can be found on Rokeros.com facebook page. For the most part, off-season seems to be summer (as I'm writing this...) but I am climbing anyway. It is very rainy in the summer. It doesn't really get too cold in winter in Salta, except in the Puna.

There is a climbing club near the center called Janajman. Great people, very welcoming. Please support the club, it is only 200 pesos for a month membership and they will even help you if you need to borrow a tent or need a partner. Worth every peso.

The trad destination is a day+ of hiking with mules, apparently, but has big walls up to 600m. Haven't gone yet. The season starts in April. Will update then.

There is sport climbing north of La Caldera in a jungle environment. It is mostly easy but on nice rock with a couple of roofs. It is called Alta Liana. Bring bug spray, the mosquitos are a nightmare. Actually, just don't go in the summer. Too humid anyway.

Red sandstone reminiscent of Utah can be found near Cafayate and Brealito and they have a wider array of routes, all bolted. There is bouldering, too.

The Puna (14000' desert west of the city) has bouldering and roped climbing on volcanic tuff.

I will update more over the next few months. Have only visited one area so far but I wanted to get Salta on the map!

Salta is known for its empanadas. Make sure you give them a try. The food is great and, as far as cities go, these guys keep it tranquilo. Very nice place to visit.

Getting There

Domestic flights or driving to Argentina from Bolivia. Not the easiest or most visited place in Argentina, but a lovely place nonetheless
