Central Tower of Pine 11,670'

California > High Sierra > 07 - Humphreys Basin,…

Description

The Central Tower of Pine, aka "The Shimmering Buttress", is the prominent granite buttress that can be seen from the majority of Pine Creek Road, high up to the south in the Tungstar Bowl. The Tower is really just a bump on the sinuous north ridge of unnamed Peak 12,388', a mountain which holds little interest to the modern climber. Peak 12,388' has been climbed via loose class 2 talus slopes. Two known routes exists on the buttress - Up the Creek (III 5.10? R by Ketron & Melkonian ca.2000), and the North Couloir (III AI2 M3)

Getting There

From the Pine Creek Pass trailhead, follow the trail and switchbacks until reaching the wall at the Brownstone Mine. Head south, cross-country, up into the Tungstar Bowl. Allow 3 hours for the rough approach.
