Description

Way way above the Buttermilk country is a cluster of alpine boulders known as Heaven, nestled in an alpine valley in between Mt Humphreys and Basin Mountain at the headwaters of McGee Creek. The boulders are big, the rock is good, and the temps are dreamy in the summer. That said, it takes a lot of time and effort to get here, the landings aren't always the best, and if you get hurt it is a long way to the hospital. Still, this place is well worth checking out and a good escape from the heat. The season is July-October. I'm naming the boulders here because they need names in order to be able to convey information, not because I was the first one to discover and name them. If they have pre-existing names that I do not know, I am happy to correct them.

Getting There

You will need high clearance. Drive up the Buttermilk road past the main zone until it crosses Mcgee Creek. After the creek crossing, the road makes a hairpin at the top of a moraine and several roads branch out to the left, stay right and continue up the moraine. Continue straight for a while until you go through some pretty aspen groves and past a few nice campsites. The road then becomes quite steep, if you have four wheel drive you can continue, otherwise park here and hike the last mile. If you have 4 wheel drive, continue straight up the steep hill and try not to think about what would happen if you slid off the road and down the hill. At the top of the hill, the road bears left and then levels out. Continue straight past a few turnoffs to a parking area in a little valley. Park here. Hike west up the steep trail until you reach the top of the moraine and the trail turns north. Continue north through some small meadows and past the Mountain Light wall on the left, until you are right next to the stream on the right. Continue straight, north, until the stream and the trail start to turn back to the west again. Cross the stream and pick up a faint trail on the other side of the creek, heading west. The trail then makes some switchbacks up the north side of a little valley that has a waterfall at its head. Continue up the switchbacks until the trail leads you to the top of the waterfall. You are now in another little valley above the previous one, and you will see the boulders.
