Description

Cast Iron Crag has 1 pitch routes from 5.8-5.10 protected by bolts and gear. The rock on the crag is extremely hard, highly featured but brittle, black volcanic rock. All routes are overhanging. Some are solid and safe. Some are loose and sketchy.

The top of the crag could be reached from the right on steep scree. Leading No Worries (.8) is the best way to set topropes.

Getting There

It is located up the East Fork (San Juan) Road. From CO Highway 160, drive about 1 mile to the East Fork Campground. 1.4 miles beyond the campground (road closed in winter) the road is in a straightaway - there is a small pullout next to the river.

Across the road is a log that runs straight up a steep dirt slope. The crag is just 100 yards uphill - the bolts on the right side of the crag are visible from the road. Approach the base via a stream bed 50' left of the previously mentioned log. Hike 50' feet from the road on a faint track near the stream bed, then over down trees, then up and right on steep ground to the crag.
