Description

This small bouldering area is in The Anza Borrego Desert State Park, situated at the mouth of a drainage that spills onto the desert floor below the Pinyon Ridge. The area is low elevation, more sheltered, and typically warmer and less windy than Culp Valley or Jasper Boulders, making it a good option for the coldest days. The sector currently consists of 3 boulders The Glorihole, The Coccyx, and The Magic Pebble, the later of the 2 being somewhat small, but containing good quality mid-range problems with little approach. The potential for additional climbing definitely exists if you're willing to walk. Most of the known development was done around 2006/2007 by Ian McIntosh and Kris Kalisuch. Remember to tread and pad lightly in the desert, it is a fragile environment. Use the sandy wash to hike in as much as possible.

On a side note, the large open area to your left/ east (Galleta Meadows) when entering the first stretch of dirt road has many cool and interesting metal sculptures by artist Ricardo Breceda scattered about. Check them out after climbing. abdnha.org/borrego-springs-…

Getting There

From the Christmas Tree Circle round-about in Borrego Springs head south on S-3/ Borrego Springs Rd for about 3.6 miles. Turn right onto the second dirt road after the large curve (not the first, with chain link fenced in utility boxes at the bottom, this is a private road and does not go through). From the beginning of the dirt road, head south for .8 miles and turn right (west), continue for approximately .25 miles. to a "T" in the road and turn left. At .5 miles turn right. Heading into the wash, drive another 1.1 miles to the parking at the mouth of the canyon (see google earth map). Park in the wash below the entrance to the arroyo. The wash can be rough and very sandy in places but with some but reasonable driving skills is very doable with 2wd. From the parking area head up the wash slightly less than .2 miles to The Coccyx located on the right side and somewhat in the wash.

Looks rad! I'll venture out there this January. My wife and I are staying at that Palm Canyon resort which is literally right there. Dec 11, 2017
