Description

Rollstone Boulder is an iconic rock in the city of Fitchburg. The rock used to sit in a nearby quarry until it was moved. They blew the rock into chunks and reassembled it on Main Street. It even has its own Wikipedia page. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rol…. The bouldah itself sits perched on granite blocks in the middle of Main Street. There’s some landscaping and shrubs to contend with. There’s also lots of traffic. The climbing seems decent besides some calcified footholds. There are no ticks or chalking of holds.

Getting There

Drive down Main Street in Fitchburg. If you miss it, you’re blind. Park anywhere. Walk over. Walk over to the bar called The Boulder afterwards for a drink.

Yes. I spoke with the chief and the captain of the police department when I did some work for them. They thought it was weird, but it’s technically part of the public park. Dec 11, 2017

Being in a formal landscape setting, I think it would be pretty inappropriate and rude to climb on this, even if it isn't technically illegal. Dec 11, 2017

Why rude? It should be fun! It has tons of history, and I’m sure folks climbed on it at some point. Respect the area and the rock, and everything is good. While it may not fit the classical idea of climbing, I will still climb it. It’s there for the public to enjoy, so I’m going to enjoy it. Dec 11, 2017

If the police say it's ok, then go for it! Dec 11, 2017

Have you guys ever built a formal public landscaping with plantings, mulch, and edging only to have some clods stomp all over it? I would be willing to bet if people make a habit of it, that climbing on it WILL be banned, and that is not good for the reputation of climbers and climbing access in general. The cops probably just didn't have a particular ordinance to follow so figured it was not an issue to deal with unless they get complaints. Dec 11, 2017

Yes I have. It’s my job. In my personal experience as a mason and landscaper, I know these things happen. Go to any public space and the landscaping gets walked on. That’s just what happens. I’m obviously not advocating trashing the place, but if you go, climb, and pick up after yourself. There shouldn’t be an issue. This boulder was used as a local gathering area for years. People picnicked on it, climbed on it, and jumped off it. I can guarantee that. In the spirit of the boulder, I would say it’s inappropriate to not climb it! I had folks watching actually interested in what I was doing. The area in the city itself is known for not being so great. I’ve seen prostitutes and drug deals in the area. I think that climbing in the community is a positive, and maybe it will get some city kid into climbing! You are the admin. Take it down if you must, but it will not stop me from enjoying it. No, I wouldn't take the page down (I am not a Mass admin anyway). It is a cool boulder with lots of history that is fun to know about. I still think the plantings, based on your photos, are too close to not be put in jeopardy. I guess we will have to disagree on the appropriateness of climbing around them anyway. Dec 12, 2017

If the plantings are trampled due to enjoyment of the rock, then they were put in the incorrect spot. Dec 22, 2017
