Hillside Drive in San Juan National Forest

Colorado > Four Corners Area

Description

There are at least 3 crags here: Toby Crag, LogJam Crag (submitted as Carly Crag), and Grindstone Crag and additional boulders.

Per Tyson Atwell: the Hillside Drive Area contains at least 4 distinct sandstone crags of excellent quality: Hillside Bouldering, Toby Crag, Carly Crag, and the Hunting Camp Area. Many additional bouldering areas and cliffs can be found dispersed throughout the forest on both sides of Hillside Drive, Grindstone Road, and beyond.

Getting There

10.5 miles south of Rico, Colorado take a left at Hillside Drive, and continue 7.5 miles up the road. Park on the right hand side in a nice-sized pullout. The first set of boulders will be in the forest to the left, on the uphill side just a couple hundred of feet off the road. This is Hillside East. To reach Hillside West, continue up the road another 5.2 miles. Take a right when the road comes to a Y, continue on another 1.7 miles, and pull off right into a hunting camp to park. From here, the boulders are located 0.65 miles downhill. The descent is very steep and can be treacherous, be careful as the boulders are below a crag. The safest approach is staying right of the crag.

Per Wendy Henderson: it is on Hillside Dr. in San Juan National Forest between Dolores and Rico Colorado. Hillside National Forest is incorrect.

[Hide Comment] Some of the best sandstone in the San Juans can be found along Hillside Drive. The directions on this main page are a little weird (and whoever wrote them has east and west mixed up), just follow directions on the page for each crag instead. The main bouldering up here is located on the left (north) at 7.5 miles as described and is home to testpieces like Rico Suave (V11) and Bold as Love (V8), with about 10-15 other problems scattered about.

At one point, these boulders were on MP but someone had them removed, which brings me to another rant: I really don't understand the hush hush attitude here. The king lines have been done years ago. Unless Telluride or Dolores somehow become major metro areas, God forbid, this area is just too far from people and pavement to ever become excessively popular. These crags are probably the best climbing in Montezuma County, and if you live there, like me, they're an amazing summer resource and deserve to be celebrated.

The lack of traffic shows; include a brush and a pair of loppers in your standard rack. If everyone contributed just a little bit of maintenance with each visit, these crags would be in awesome shape. Toby seems especially prone to getting grown over and is real schwack to get between routes right now, but the climbing is worth it. Jun 21, 2022

[Hide Comment] Outstanding bulletproof sandstone in a gorgeous alpine setting. Thank you for all of the hard work to make a great many existing routes a reality. Unfortunately, trad is king here... beta is scarce, and every year it seems these crags and approaches become so overgrown from underutilization, it really begins to detract from the experience and potential this inspiring rock holds for all the great people working so hard to live here. Share some beta and stoke on the existing routes and projects if you have it! I believe all of these areas could benefit from more consistent use, as well as better communication, collaboration, and forward-thinking progression from local climbers. Aug 31, 2022
