Getting weather forecast...

One of the more obscure formations at the Lake - I've only met one person who has climbed here besides me and Burt! Lost in that nether area above the Quarry, the rock has an usual number of vugs lined with well-formed quartz crystals.

Mentioned in a throw-away line in the Swartling & Mayer guide.

We explored 5 routes, 5.4 to 5.10. There is at least one hard route on the west face of this formation, crying out for someone to unlock it.

Getting There

The easiest approach currently would be to hike up from the bottom. Park at the lower end of the Quarry, then hike up to Aladdin's Castle, then hike west (toward the Lake), staying on contour. (Keep in mind that the Quarry itself is closed to all public access.)

It is also possible to come in from above. Hike until you are just east of the Quarry headwall, then drop down. When the peregrines are nesting in the Quarry (Feb - June), you can do them a favor and come up from below, rather than upsetting them by using this approach.

Climbed Rickety Rib today. I agree with Doug, very unique features for DL and enjoyable to climb. After I saw it posted on Mountain project I had to go check it out as its one of a handful of buttresses I haven't climbed over the years. It is on the elevation diagram in the 1995 edition but not mentioned (as Doug said) in the text until the 2008 edition. The guide describes it as 40 feet high but I think its 60+ feet. Mar 10, 2018

Hey Terry! Did Rickety Ric butt catch much direct sun for you? Wondering if it does this time of year? With no leaves on the trees I am guessing it may have. Did you get on the steep lines on the Western exposure? These lines and superb I think.. Mar 12, 2018

Hi Burt, The buttress did catch a lot of sun on south and west face. The East side where Grotesque (fun!) is was shaded but the rock was warm enough. I did not get on any really steep lines but the face right of Grotesque holds some promise. The approach was less than pleasant! Mar 12, 2018

Your right Terry! The face right of "Grotesque Features" does not only hold promise... it is stellar. Have two lines established so far. The right line shares the start of GF up to about 40 mark then steps right along weaknesses and takes the overhanging block and cracks above straight on...goes at 5.9+ and has great gear except for maybe the top 10 feet or so. There is a right most line that climbs the slab on the right up to the point where you can pull up into the right side of the roof line... this line also feels like 5.9 as well. The right line could have a direct start to it added, with no gear and thin hard pulls.... Yep... the approach up to this buttress has endless un-even footing and ankle and shin banging small talus the whole way... Mar 12, 2018
