Routes in Putterman's Outhouse Ampitheatre

Putterman's Pinkies T 5.10c 6b 20 VII 20 E2 5b
Access Issue: RAIN, WET ROCK and RAPTOR CLOSURES: The sandstone around Moab is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Also please ask and be aware of Raptor Closures in areas such as CAT WALL and RESERVOIR WALL in Indian Creek Details

Description

This is the general alcove area that surrounds Putterman's Outhouse. It's orientation varies from roughly north facing to approximately southeast facing as it wraps around. Putterman's Pinkies is an obvious line that is listed in Eric Bjornstadt's Desert Rock - Wall Street to the San Rafael Swell. There are also a handful of superb looking cracks in the area, many of which will require negotiating the Dewey Bridge layer to get to the better rock above.

Getting There

(Directions based on names provided in Google Maps) Take Hwy 191 North out of Moab to Mill Canyon Road. Take a left on Mill Canyon Road and follow it until you get to a big parking lot sort of area. Take BLM 343, which has a little "M&M" sign out of the Northwest Corner of the parking lot area. This will wind around for a ways until it abruptly drops into a gulley. At this point you will probably want a 4WD with good clearance (or some epic 2WD lowrider driving skills...). Take a left in this gulley (shown as Sevenmile Rim Safari Rte in google maps) and follow it as it winds down a creek bed, still following the "M&M" signs, ultimately passing over a wet area at a spring. The road and creek bed are kind of braided here, so don't get too hung up on which one to take. Just after a short section with tight turns and big rocks on the side (caution here), it opens up a bit. A little further and there will be a fork in the road. The right fork goes to House of Putterman, etc. Instead, take the left fork, again following the "M&M" signs. This goes through some fun curves, and then it pops up out of the gulley, maybe a 1/4 mile before the left hand wall gets super close to the road. At this spot, there will be a wash on the right with a sign for no vehicles in the wash. There is a good pulloff parking spot here. (Note: continuing ahead on the road will ultimately get you to Echo Pinnacle, Monitor, Merrimac, and ultimately Hwy 313).

An easy hike up the wash and some minor talus rambline will get you up to Putterman's Outhouse (obvious little tower) and the Putterman's Pinkies (obvious big pink dihedral above and right of the tower) area.
