Description
This beautiful granite formation is a stones throw across Hwy 244 west of the Mount Rushmore Memorial parking area. Development in this area started in 1984 and as of today there are only trad and mixed climbing. Most of the routes are on the north face so shade all day. A few test pieces face west so keep that in mind when jumping on them.
Getting There
Easiest way to get to this area is if you have a parking pass for the Monument; park there and walk west across Hwy 244 approximately 100 yards.
However most of us dirt bag climbers don’t !
Alternative:
Traveling Northwest by the Monument you will see the employee parking lot (DO NOT PARK HERE). There are two pullouts roughly 500 feet passed on either side of Hwy 244. Pickups and cars will be fine, larger vehicles proceed to the profile parking area further down the road.
Locate trails south of the pullouts or employee parking that will take you to the formation.
Hwy is very busy take care when parking and leaving, also show respect to all we want to always be able to climb in the Rushmore Needles.
