Description

Greater Bangor: Including Clifton and inland hills to the East

Bangor is the second biggest city in Maine and in it's vicinity there is some excellent climbing. The low mountain range that defines the muscled boundaries of Penobscot Bay slouches up to her then fades to the east as the land rolls to New Brunswick. Much of the rock that can be found is crystalline granite, and there is myriad bouldering. Standout climbing in the area is at Clifton, much utilized by students of the nearby University of Maine at Orono.

Major Climbing Areas:

Clifton Maine is the heavy hitter in this area. While hundreds of boulders lurk in the woods waiting to be untapped, and granite domes are slowly being blasted away by quarries, Clifton sits well preserved a close satellite of Bangor & Orono. Typically frequented on the weekend by students from the University of Maine and other local colleges, Clifton is best thought of as a trad area with bolts, or of a very bold sport area.

Some of the early locals who bolted the area were Ward Smith, who later went on to be a key figure in developing Rumney into the sport mecca it is today, and Jon Tierney, who put up many bold climbs and runs the local Acadia Mountain Guides.
