Untouched gem!

This is Hale Science's south wall 'Dihedral' right of center. This has stemming and crimps with a few good holds thrown in. It is dead vertical and has no real pro. Consider it a good free solo, because a TR would be an dubious undertaking anymore these days.

History: the Hale Science Building is the second oldest on campus with Old Main being the first one built. In Nov. 1991, we were hired by a local roofing company whose own employees refused to do the job they told their boss "up there? It's too steep no way!" So the company outsourced us climbers. We hardline negotiated our rate, got it, and up we went to strip its old wood shake roof off, long overdue for replacement. We had set up many fixed ropes to deal with the high angle sections. As with all CU buildings, it's built with typical CU sandstone rock exterior. Over the course of the job, we kept spying a few 'good' lines. Then one day, Tom Sciolino and I decided to snag a first ascent after work. As the sun quickly dropped along with the temps, I belayed Tom in his plastic double boots, and we nailed the TR first ascent of 'Ssshit, it's Cold' !

Numerous lines - especially the North wall and its tower, await the adventurous climber with well funded legal backing, hint.

Getting There

Entering Boulder from the south, get onto Broadway. Head north to the Hill and then right on University. There is ample parking on University near the pond and Mackey auditorium. From there, walk south uphill a little keeping Mackey Auditorium and McKenna Lang buildinggs to your left. Hale sits directly right of Old Main uphill from Varsity Lake which is more like a pond. You can't miss it. If you're feeling burly, do a cool down session on the arch bridge or at the Mackey pits.
