Description

This area on the southwest part of the Muchia Cheii has the most sport climbs of the entire ridge. Aboland is a collection of pointy smaller ridges with mostly single pitch climbs. This spot is not as iconic as further northeast on the Muchia Cheii, but is the most developed because it is easy to approach from the picnic spots down below. Climb on white limestone with a full variety of difficulties. Access trails are not as beaten down here as in western Europe or the US because there are not a lot of climbers in Romania comparatively. Despite this area being the most developed spot you can still find solitude here. Beware of bears here. Make noise on the approach and always be aware of approaching sounds. Make noise so no one gets surprised. There is bouldering potential here on large boulders below the cliffs.

Getting There

Drive from the west through the cut with zipline at Cheile Rasnov, as the road changes to the northeast you will see picnic structures (roofs) and a stream on the right. Park here where you see the meadow leading up to Aboland. Use the photo to figure out how it looks here, it can be confusing if you keep driving because there is plenty more cliffs to the northeast which are a longer walk and not correct. Sometimes the path is obvious up to Aboland, sometimes it is grown over with grass. Go up the right side of the meadow through the grass until it constricts and a real trail forms. A more obvious path is visible from the road on the left side of the meadow, but this is used mainly by picnic people who gather wood and the path disappears in the woods. If you end up there you will have to bushwhack straight up to the cliffs and then make a right until you connect with more beaten paths.
