Description Suggest change

A prominent, flat-topped peak visible from South Lake. Famous for the 4 alpine ice and snow couloirs on its North face and with a relatively short approach, Mt Thompson features stunning views of the Evolution group and Palisades from its 13,497' summit. An easy but exposed descent down the North Ridge (class 3) provides a quick way down off the peak.

Names of the 4 couloirs, L-R: Knudtson, Smrz, Harrington, and Moynier

Getting There Suggest change

NORTH FACE: From the South Lake hikers parking lot, head up the Bishop Pass Trail for about one mile, then fork right onto the Treasure Lakes Trail. After another mile or so and a few switchbacks, head cross-country up and over the rock ridge to the West. Drop into the bowl which drains the north sides of Mt Gilbert and Mt Thompson, following the moraine up to the base. Overnight parties will find excellent campsites along unnamed lakes in the bowl. Thompson is also easily climbed in a day from the Trailhead.

EAST FACE: Take the Sabrina Basin Trail passing Blue Lake to either Donkey or Baboon Lakes, the latter in particular is very scenic.
