Description

La Dame Jouanne used to be a very popular area because it contains some of the tallest boulders in the forest, including the namesake boulder which is one of the most iconic and possibly THE tallest. This is an area of historical signifiance as the strong Parisian alpinists like Robert Paragot came here to train, especially on the infamous Circuit Mauve, an extremely long and committing succession of very high boulders. The area has fallen from the limelight with the advent of crashpads and modern bouldering and is fairly quiet these days.

Most of the area is a big jumble so expect sometimes very poor landings. Rock quality is good overall and not as sandy as the Éléphant sector down the road, though there are exceptions. Some problems can take a while to dry.

Parts of the area have been fenced off as the plateau is crumbling and big boulders have fallen down. Other parts are fenced off as part of revegetation efforts.

Classics include L'angle parfait (7B), L'arête de Larchant (3+ highball, polished), La tour de Babel (7B+)...

Getting There

From Larchant (SW of Fontainebleau), follow signs to Éléphant/Dame Jouanne. You'll pass the Éléphant sector on your left, then a carpark to your left (Bois d'Hyver) before eventually reaching a crossing with a dirt road, with an inn on your right. Park at the large dirt carpark on the other side of the road. Do not park at the inn (Chalet Jobert) unless you're going to eat there.

Cross the road and follow the path along the inn to the barrier. The chaos of boulders is on the hillside to the left.
