Description
A large dome-like rock structure, one of the two features for which the main area is named, the other being the Spire. The heights vary depending on what side you are on, but are mostly between 30-50 feet.
The rock is featured in a variety of ways, depending on which aspect you are on. The north side is short, steep, roughly textured, and heavily featured. The west side is steep/overhanging, smooth and has mostly small features. The south side is smoothly featured, steep/overhanging on the bottom and dome like on the upper half. The southeast side is a low-angled and highly featured.
Getting There
There are a lot of unmarked trails in and around this area. To get to Split Rock itself from the parking area, there is a trail on the northeast side of the round-a-bout, follow this trail northwards, more or less contouring slope, through the woods, cross a small meadow after a few hundred yards. At this point, the trail becomes more distinct as it continues north. The trail passes through some more small meadows and forest patches. The trail passes by the top of Split Rock after about 3-5 min of walking from parking lot. Right before you arrive to Split Rock, you go down a short steep slope and see a small year round spring on your uphill side. The rock is now just downhill on your left. The rock doesn’t look super distinct from the uphill side. There are use trails that access the base of the climb from both the north and south sides of the main access trail.
