DescriptionEast Buttress is an awesome 600ft fin of mostly excellent limestone just on the south east rim of the Frazier Cirque. With an easy approach (for alpine style) and a glorious walk off, this buttress makes for a super fun alpine experience close to Bozeman. Even though these climbs are quite accessible they are still in the alpine, meaning that the routes here do have runouts and overall an adventurous feel and do require alpine rock climbing experience. Bailing via rappelling is not recommended for these routes.
Getting ThereTo approach, take the same trail to access Frazier Basin from the parking lot but before you reach the crest of the ridge at the top of the meadow, stay to the left of the obvious strip of tress that sit in the middle of the saddle that forms the ridge of the basin. These trees are where you want to stash bags and any gear that is not necessary for climbing. After stashing gear, head straight down the obvious steep hill to the left of the strip of trees and into the basin (I recommend heading towards the most obvious drainage about halfway down due to more solid footing and less vegetation). Once at the bottom of the hill walk left through some trees and meadows for less than a 1/4 mile until you see an obvious drainage leading up and left to the buttress.
To descend, from the final tree belay at the top of the formation walk 20ft climber's left past a few trees to a nice downward sloping grassy ramp. When the ramp t-bones into another drainage, walk up the drainage to the right for 50ft or so until it is easy to cross over left onto the hillside. Walk down the super nice grassy hillside parallel to the ridge to a short strip of trees. Pass through the trees and walk down another beautiful grassy hillside to the strip of trees that sit on the ridge where you first dropped in. From here walk down the meadow that leads to the trail back to the parking lot.
