Access Issue: Access issue - Monastery, Cedar Park, Combat Rock, etc. - open since 2023
Details
Update: per Bruce Hildenbrand: the area has been open since 2023. Per
JF M: as of May 2022, there is no signage on-site, nor information on the USFS webpage for the Cameron Peak Fire (nor on their published map of closures) that indicates the area is closed.
Per
Bruce Hildenbrand: it appears that the Forest Service has closed access to all the climbing areas accessed via Storm Mountain Road (Monastery, Cedar Park, Combat Rock, etc.) until they can clear all the dangerous dead trees from the Cameron Peak fire.
I worked this issue with Eric Murdock at the AF, and it looks like the Forest Service picked Devil's Gulch Road as the southern boundary even though all the climbing areas on MP.com were not burned.
Description
I found this boulder while scoping out fishing spots along the Big Thompson River. It's slightly overhung on great rock and is maybe 12' at the tallest point. The landing is flat sand. First climbed this in July -- not sure how access changes with water levels other times of the year.
Bring a fishing pole, and relax on the sand, enjoying this beautiful spot!
When I found this boulder, it was dirty and lichen covered. I am not from the area and have no idea if this is a first ascent. For now I will assume so, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Getting There
From Estes Park downtown, head east on US 34. Take this until you reach Estes Park Mountain Shop (on your right). At this point, reset your odometer and continue 9.8 miles in the direction of Drake. At 9.8 miles in, you will see a pullout on your right just before a left hand bend in the road marked with yellow directionals. Park in this pullout, and walk through rock and debris toward the water. Look for a round, white boulder with an angled face. The angled face is above a flat patch of sand.
