Valley of The Chickens

Colorado > S Platte > Badger Mountain > Badger Flats

Description

This area has Far Left, Left Wing, Rooster Tail, Chicken Rock, Going Away Party, and The Egg.

There is camping here. The approaches are short. The rock is good.

Getting There

From Lake George, go west on US 24. Between MM 259 & 258, go north on Park County Rd. 31 for 4.8 miles, go west (left) on Forest Service Rd. 44 (La Salle Pass), and go a mile to an intersection. You can see the massif of Valley of The Chickens. Take the middle fork and drive 0.8 miles.

Per Evan C: take US 24 several miles past Lake George, take a right onto FS 31. Continue for several more miles down the dirt road until you see a sign for La Salle Pass Road and an intersection. Take a left at the intersection onto FS 46, and continue down this for a bit. The road gets a bit bumpy here, but my Civic didn't have any issues. Look for another intersection, and take a right and then an immediate left onto FS 229. Take the next right when the road forks, and you should see the rock at this point so just go towards it. There are several parking options.

This is probably the reason the camping near the crag is closed. The sites are trashed, and the OHV crowd doesn't seem to care about the closure signs.

[Hide Comment] The GPS tag is a bit off, Google wants to take you way around the back side and away from the rock. This should be a bit more accurate: 39.09905, -105.5228.

Directions, if I recall correctly, are as follows if coming from Colorado Springs....

Take US 24 several miles past Lake George, take a right onto 31. Continue for several more miles down the dirt road until you see a sign for La Salle Pass Road and an intersection. Take a left at the intersection onto 46, and continue down this for a bit. The road gets a bit bumpy here, but my Civic didn't have any issues. Great camping opportunities exist right at the base of the crags, but the area is popular with offroaders / gun enthusiasts during the summer. Sep 14, 2017

[Hide Comment] This has got to be one of the best beginner areas in Colorado. It's a miracle that it's not more popular. Jul 14, 2020

[Hide Comment] Very nice area! FYI, new camping rules now prohibit camping at the crag. Designated dispersed camping is allowed nearby. Please don’t give climbing a bad rap with the rangers by ignoring the signs. Jul 11, 2021

[Hide Comment] Just a heads up the roads in are blocked off (presumably to allow the area to recover). It's just a 10 min extra walk. Most of the campsites close to the climbing area are also closed to camping. Jul 16, 2023
