Description

Subalpine crags overlooking a gorgeous mountain basin. These cliffs provide fun cragging in a secluded setting accessed by an enjoyable moderate backpack.

Aside from the occasional camouflaged bolt and a small path, there is little evidence of human presence in this area. Please use good judgement and practice Leave No Trace principals while in the area.

See Ron Brunkhorst's excellent guide "The Big Empty" for more in-depth information and history on this area.

Getting There

To access the trail head:
From Townsendhead west on Highway 12 turn left on Cabin Creek road (also possible to turn on to the North Fork of Deep Creek road before entering the national forest. Follow the main road to its high point (46.39299, -111.1822)and turn north onto a side road with an open USFS gate. Continue on this road to a 4-way junction (2 roads closed/ decommissioned). If you have a low clearance vehicle consider parking here as the road/ trail get a little rough between here and the trail head. Take the left trail (Subaru or better clearance) and drive for 0.5-0.65 miles to the marked trail head (46.41359, -111.17946). Note that there are no signs for the trail along this route, so a GPS is handy for navigation.

The Needles:
From the Edith Lake trail head, follow the trail up and over Edith Pass to Edith Lake. Continue past the lake to a clearly marked junction and take the right (east) trail, signed for the Needles. Follow this trail to the Needles. Although this trail does not branch, an outfitter camp exists before the first large stream crossing. To avoid confusion, at this branch take a right and follow the trail markers (reflective diamond). If you end up in the camp look for a feeder trail uphill toward the creek that rejoins the main trail.
