Description

More of a high section of a N-S ridge than a peak. There are three summits near the north end of the ridge: North, Central, South. Highest is the Central summit - GPS latitude longitude (N45.2289 E6.0363) - (elevation 2342 meters / 7680 ft). The ridge is 1 km long. Its north end is Col de l'Aigleton (N45.2308 E6.0369) and its south end at Pas de la Coche (N45.2177 E6.0295).

During winter and spring, people ski up to or over that col and pass, also at least one of more of the couloirs / steep gullies in the middle of the ridge.

There are a couple of known multi-pitch climbing routes up to high points on the ridge, but the main interest for climbers is in traversing all or parts of the ridge.

Traverses:
  • full ridge Crête du Pin traverse S to N [ see on c2c CampToCamp ] -- Starts at the S end at Pas de la Coche and could to the N end, but many people stop and exit off W side after the Central summit. Many parties take the most difficult climbing sections by rappel (which tends to explain the choice of the direction S to N).
  • South ridge of South summit [ see on c2c CampToCamp ] -- Shorter version of the above.
  • full ridge Crête du Pin traverse N to S -- more pitches of more interesting climbing in the more fun uphill way, than the other sense of the traverse.
  • partial Crête of the Best 5 Points -- tight focus on higher more interesting climbing at N end of traverse.

Getting There

Usually reached from the W side, from the asphalt road going SE from the village of Prabert about 3 km to trailhead parking at GPS latitude longitude approx (N45.2245 E5.9988). There's an official trail to its south end at Pas de la Coche, and an unofficial users herd path to its north end at Col de l'Aigleton. More direct travel to the higher summits of the center of the ridge is obstructed by a giant bowl of talus -- but that approach becomes more feasible in springtime with snow covering it.
