Description
The Great Wall complex is a group of rock walls and tiers wrapping from the southwest to the southeast around the South Peak, immediately below the popular hikers' lookout. These crags are amongst the closest to the parking lot and have some of the best climbing routes on Quadra Island.
Getting There
It's a steep hike to the base of the Great Wall following the climbers' path up from the Beech's Mountain hiking trail just 150m west of the Chinese Mountains parking area. Follow the path uphill to an open mossy meadow. The Great Wall and the prow of Silk Road can be seen high above the trees. Hike straight uphill following the obvious tread. Note the path that breaks off to the left to Manzanita Wall but ignore this and continue directly uphill.
The path enters the forest and passes Leaning Tree Edge which is to the right. Pass the base of Black Crag and continue up a forested draw to the obvious base of the Great Wall. The lowest point of the crag is the start of Silk Road and the best landmark to then locate the other walls and climbs from.
Behind and just uphill a few metres from the base Silk Road is a lovely open ledge that looks over the top of Manzanita Wall and makes a perfect spot to ditch packs and have lunch etc...
