Description
The Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River starts in the high country near Pilot Peak and flows east through the second largest granitic gorge in the US. Starting near the hamlet of Crandall and ending near the town of Clark, the Clarks Fork Canyon is home to a lifetime's worth of adventure on a variety of granite and gneiss formations up to 2000' in height and limestone walls at its mouth over 3000' in height. Area highlights include the Chief (home to the 900' Yellow Wolf 5.14a), the Mouth (home to M11, one of the longest sport climbs in the US), the Reef (an easily accessible side canyon with 60+ routes up to 7 pitches in length), and the Sunlight Gorge (roadside skycragging), but there are many more zones as well with little to no published beta. The "Clarky" as its known by locals is one of the most epic rock climbing areas in the eastern Rocky Mountains with almost endless potential for new high quality climbs of all varieties.
Getting There
To the upper Clarks Fork: Take Hwy 120 to the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (196), drive over Dead Indian Pass and drop into Sunlight Basin. Most climbing areas in the Upper Clarks Fork are located along 196 but there are additional crags on Hwy 212 as well.
To the Mouth: Drive on Hwy 120 north of Cody, Wyoming about 10 miles South of the Montana line is Edelweiss, a bar/restaurant/campground. Turn left here and head West toward Clark, veer left after several miles, the road leads into the canyon. Rock shoots out of the ground on either side as you enter the canyon.
