Description

This is a boulderfield off of Spring Creek (CO Hwy 90, AKA Dave Wood Road) ~15 minutes from town.

Getting There

Drive west of Montrose on CO Hwy 90 (initially Main Street in Montrose). About a mile out of city limits, take a left to stay on CO Hwy 90. About a mile later, take a right to stay on CO Hwy 90. About a mile later, take a left on Dave Wood Road. Drive about 8 miles just passing Tres Coyotes Drive on the left. Park just where the pavement changes to dirt.

Hike out across the field towards the canyon edge (faint trail), and find another faint trail going downhill into the canyon, passing through a small cliffband. Then go uphill in front of the cliff that forms a prow, then go downhill again into the boulderfield. When viewing from the point, most of the bouldering us "up canyon," to your left looking into the valley and on the flat that is formed below the cliff talus/slope. The total approach is ~1 mile, 20 minutes. See the map.

Encountered a bear in the south end if the boulderfield. He was just doing his thing, but I recommend bring bear spray. Jul 13, 2017
Most of the boulders require some cleaning (liken, moss, etc.), and some have choss, but for the most part, the holds are really solid. Lots of potential for hard problems as well as easy ones. There are 100+ boulders in the field, and very few have been climbed. Have fun! May 8, 2017
