Crocodile Rock

Montana > Southwest Region > Hyalite Canyon
Access Issue: Potential road closures in winter. Details

Description

South facing, likely to have the place to yourself. Short, but fun, routes ranging from 5.9 - 5.12a. Overhangatang boulders are down below. ~5 minute approach depending on where you park. Look back down the canyon after parking, and notice the croc's jaws protruding from the very top of the crag.

Another area climbers left which hosts a few routes and potentially more. Walk left along the base of the wall for 100 yards, up and over a small hump, until you reach a formation with a massive, obvious roof. Routes on the North and West faces. Chain anchors up top on West face on a big ledge which can be access by hiking up further left, and back right out on top of the formation.

Getting There

Rock is on your left just past 4 miles from the canyon entrance. Park about 150 yards up the road from the formation and walk back. Just before reaching the massive boulder by the road, head uphill through the scree field here, marked by a cairn.
