CONAF employees are cool. It helps to have some Spanish when requesting a non-guided ascent. I presented my AAC card and EMT card to them. Also had a list of previous days in the hills, training, and photos. Entrance fee is $3000 CP, and show up to the CONAF office on Camino Al Volcán at 0700 on your day of ascent. Talk to CONAF a day prior if you plan on ascending without a guide.

They requested I rent a radio, in addition to the mandatory ice axe, crampons, and helmet (two of which I left at home due to backpack volume when travelling). This makes sense. A word of advice: check in with CONAF after descent if you climb without a guide, whether by stopping in or radioing. This should be obvious, but not to a novice "trip leader" like me. They found us in town after our climb to make sure we were safe. Humbling experience, grateful for CONAF.

Crampons were mostly unnecessary, although some wore them near the summit, where the route steepens and ice is present. Good glissading on descent. Oct 28, 2017
