Description Suggest change

A hidden treasure a few minutes drive from NYC this area is a portion of the Watchung mountains. Several large outcroppings of excellent trap rock. Mostly bouldering height with some highballs depending on where you draw the line. Easy to walk top outs, decent tree cover and approachable in sandals. The deer are more bother than the people.

Note on access: The status of bouldering in Passaic parks is uncertain. Ordinances exist prohibiting "mountain climbing", older ordinances prohibit "technical rock climbing". However, this seems to be specifically to prevent roped climbing on the large cliff faces in the park. Park staff does not seem to take issue with bouldering which is also allowed on nearby Garrett mountain. As always please be respectful, brush off tick marks, do not disturb the other park goers, and stay safe. Getting There Suggest change

Heading either North or South on 46 take the Great Notch exit and head north on Rifle Camp Road. Look for the sign for rifle camp park and the turn off on the right. Follow the road through to the pond parking lot, park and walk towards the pond from the south corner of the lot, the first rock face will be on your right and are hard to miss.
