Fessenden Block

Massachusetts > Eastern, MA > Townsend, MA Bouldering

Description

This is a nice, small, slabby, very lonely granite block. The rock quality is very good and for a small boulder it holds several routes.

Getting There

Take Fessenden Hill Rd. until you reach the gate and gravel parking lot. Park and walk down the gravel road past the gate. The block is on the left of the trail quite a ways down, maybe a mile. You can't miss it. It's right off the road. The approach is way shorter if you park at the cul-de-sac at the end of W. Hill Rd. in New Hampshire.

[Hide Comment] The right half of the boulder had a small chunk break of on the lower corner. A lot of erosion on the front face as well, definitely needs revised ratings. Awesome time though on the back side. Jan 12, 2020
[Hide Comment] Interesting, Christopher. I was out there today, and everything looks the same. Post your opinion on grade, and perhaps folks will come to consensus.

Edit: rock was still fairly damp, and the slab side may have been tougher due to conditions. Jan 12, 2020
[Hide Comment] I thought Ain't It Enough and Just Enough were spot on and pretty sweet problems. Jet Lag 2.0 seemed tough for V2, but I will go back and try again. Alone with 1 pad, I didn't feel super comfortable trying AMPG. Apr 16, 2020

[Hide Comment] Just went out there today and was unable to go to it, because there is some logging operation going on was a little irked to be honest, but just thought I’d let you know. Jan 21, 2021
[Hide Comment] Christopher, this piece of land is able to be logged and cut by people who live in Townsend. They apply for a permit and can get a key to the gate if they burn wood in their homes. I’ve come across many loggers out here. The state may also be doing some cutting themselves. I live right up the street, and I’ll go take a peek. Best to give them some space if they are dropping trees close by. Sucks you had your trip cut short. I’m sure they will be wrapped up sometime soon. Lots of other local stuff you should check out.

Edit: yes, this is temporarily closed due to the logging. It’s a state run operation for forest management, and they have shut the trail down in that vicinity for safety. It will open back up once they are wrapped up. Jan 21, 2021
