I've climbed this spot pretty extensively from 2010-1012. I'm sure you can find more goodies up in the hills, but this is practically roadside.
I haven't been there since 2012, but I have a camp nearby. I don't 100% remember the directions, but the topo map is spot on.
This is public land. I am pretty sure it's BLM. Not sure if you can camp there, but this is that part of the valley where really anything goes. Also there are great dirt roads to bring the mountain bike, and there are hot springs nearby. This is actually a great place to spend a whole day with a brews and a grill, get a camp fire going, etc.
Beware of naked hippies, aliens, meth creepers, and big cats. People disappear in the valley.
This is North of US 285, using dirt road to a dirt road. Heading south past Villa Grove, US 285 splits from 17, dirt access road on the right. Coming from Saguache, past the edge of McIntyre Ridge, there is a dirt road on the left.
I THINK if you google "Loop 5300", it's on that road. It's really been a while since I have been back there. At some point, there is a logical pulloff to park, and the formations will be in sight.
See the map and the map pic I've attached.
