The Lake Matka canyon is a beautiful escape from Skopje and less than an hour's drive by local bus or 20 minutes by car. It offers plenty of opportunities for both sport and trad climbing, in addition to hiking, kayaking, or just relaxing at one of the canyon's restaurants. There is also a collection of medieval Orthodox churches that are worth stopping in to see the artwork and architecture.
The rock throughout the canyon is limestone and generally solid, especially on the sport routes. The sport routes are also well-bolted. Harder trad routes have plenty of pitons, so you can choose between clipping old manky pitons or shiny new ones! For routes on the opposite side of the lake from the tourist trail, there are several options for access (see specific areas for details).

Lake Matka is a 20 minute drive west from the center of Skopje. It is located on a dead-end, single-lane road and has terrible traffic issues on the weekends.
Option 1: Take a local bus from Skopje
Option 2: Book a cab to drop off and pick up, usually 1400 denar (around $30 USD) for a round trip
Option 3: Drive your own car and fight hordes of angry tourists for a parking spot.
