Fertile Crescent Area

Colorado > Grand Junction… > Unaweep Canyon > Nine Mile Hill > Nine Mile Bould… > Blue Moon Boulder Area

Description

The Fertile Crescent area is the heart of Blue Moon. The area includes the boulders between Pool of Plenty to the north and Mecca (Main area) to the south, and the dirt track to the west and East Creek to the east. The east facing hillside is densely packed with rock that ranges in quality from choss to bullet. The majority of it lies on the bullet side of the scale though. A combination of plentiful rock, mature pinyon pines, and an east facing aspect make this an ideal spot for shade during the warm season.

Getting There

The Fertile Crescent can be accessed from two areas, either parking at the Blue Moon area, or at the Mecca area by the green gate. Each access point requires a similar amount of effort to reach their respective initial boulders, but one can definitely be the better path depending on your objective. Both can take anywhere from 5-10 minutes of walking.

From the Blue Moon area parking, head northwest down the hill, eventually reach and cross East Creek, and you'll access the area's east section. I have never had trouble crossing this section of the creek, but I would imagine there are times when it may be more difficult due to snow runoff.

From the Mecca area parking by the green gate, pass through the gate and head down the hill, cross East Creek, then follow the dirt track north for about 5 minutes, then exit to the right (east) to access the area's west section. If you stay on the dirt track long enough, there is a cattle trail that exits to the east and heads north to Zevon set of boulders.
