Castle Mountains

Montana > Southwest Region

Description

The Castle Mountains are a fantastic climbing area located just southeast of White Sulphur Springs, MT. The mountain range is filled with granite spires on the west side and some of Montana's best limestone to the east. The three main climbing areas are: Grasshopper, Limestone Ridge, and Green Canyon.

Elk Peak is the highest point, at 8589 feet.

Most of the development was done by Ron and Gerald Brunckhorst along with friends and family. An exceptional guide exists for the area:

"The Big Empty" by Ron Brunckhorst can be found at Base Camp in Helena and Spire Climbing Center in Bozeman. It has a full list of routes and some great hand drawn maps of each climbing area.

Nearby White Sulphur Springs provides the closest lodging and food. A new Brewery, 2 Basset Brewery, recently opened. Numerous camping areas exist through out the mountain range.

Getting There

Access occurs off the north side of the mountain range from US-12 just east of White Sulphur Springs. See each area for specific directions.

Expect a (2) hour drive from Helena and Bozeman, and around (3) hours from Billings.
