Evening Rock is predominately west facing and gets lots of sun. It can get very hot in the summer. Most of the climbs require at least some gear. The formation is limestone, with mixed quality.

For the descent, it is easy to walk off the formation by heading north. Contour westward across the hillside before dropping down into the drainage and rejoining the trail. Aim for the meadow that is visible from the top of the formation. Avoid dropping down too soon or following the edge of Evening Rock, as this will force you to downclimb a dirty, loose potential waterfall.

From the Middle Cottonwood trail head, hike up canyon 5-10 minutes. Be on the lookout for a faint trail to the left that leads up the first major drainage. This trail winds though meadows and heavily forested sections. Once you pass a spring (very soggy portion of trail), the trail switchbacks to the right. After another minute or so, begin thinking about bushwacking to your right to reach the formation. There is no established trail from this point (at least that we could find). Total approach time, 35-40 minutes (1 mile). If you stay on the faint trail, it will take you all the way up to a meadow on the saddle, but at no point does it get any closer to Evening Rock.
