Turtle Rock

Wyoming > Laramie Area > Vedauwoo
Warning Access Issue: Bad Bolt Submission Form & USFS press releases DetailsDrop down

Description

Turtle Rock's rock quality is that regular, old, bomber, pink Sherman granite. Prepare for everything from faceholds and fingers all the way to chickenwinged offwidth jams. Bring a ton of tape! I have seen no action or activity anytime I have ever been here. The only other people I see are down on the trail itself.

Getting There

Follow the signs to the Turtle Rock Trail which encompasses the entire formation in a huge circle. Pick your spot and climb!

[Hide Comment] Be patient. Feel free to add any known routes on the formation. My father and I are going to be in the area developing a new line(s) the end of May. I will add routes and information as I have it. Like I said, feel free to add your own! Apr 10, 2016

[Hide Comment] @Jtradshaw, check out the Coke Bottle, Fall Wall, Walt's wall, etc... pages on this site. Vedauwoo.org also has some good info on the area. Apr 11, 2016

[Hide Comment] Per Skip Harper, Turtle Rock is mostly Land of the Rising Moon and surrounding areas. Again, well established area, with a LOT of climbing already in place.

Your picture depicts the formation that Fall Wall, etc. sit on (a piece of rock that, so far as I'm aware) doesn't have a name if it isn't Turtle Rock. Apr 11, 2016

[Hide Comment] Brian, it is all Turtle Rock as a whole formation/area. It's been referred to that from the earliest days. I do believe all of the areas within should be categorized under one formation, so we will let an administrator take a look. Because it is not the Nautilus or Blair (and yes, I'm aware there is established routes here), it is less popular than the other areas, and there are a lot of undeveloped lines here. I've been climbing in the Voo since I was a little kid as a local, so I know the history. My goal was to establish some of these undeveloped lines and add to the area. Apr 13, 2016

[Hide Comment] So, it should all be one area. There's a whole trail named after the formation, because it wraps all the way around it! Apr 13, 2016

[Hide Comment] Granted, but I've been climbing here since 2002, and my earliest recollection of Vedauwoo was watching my father climb Walt's Wall in 1987.

The problem is that "Turtle Rock" is really poorly defined. If you have the Halfpenny book, it might say, but in the 1977 Kopischka book, it covers only what's now known as Land of the Rising Moon. Apr 13, 2016

[Hide Comment] Jtradshaw, you really should delete this area. All the subareas are already defined and have been for generations. I am not sure what your goal is by adding "Turtle Rock", but it will make navigating the site more difficult. Your picture is of Walt's Wall, Coke Bottle, and Fall Wall. You also commented that the area sees little traffic while the opposite is true. Most likely, any new lines you think exist have already been done. Jun 2, 2016

[Hide Comment] Man when did all these areas get moved under "Turtle Rock?" This isn't even Turtle Rock. Super confusing and makes 0 sense. Dec 20, 2024
