Description
The northeast face of Mt. Quadra is home to two famous and difficult waterfall ice routes, Gimme Shelter and Arctic Dream. Dangerous avalanche hazard on the approach slopes and seracs that occasionally and randomly let go from the glacial ice at the top make either route a serious undertaking. Quadra is also remote, it’s about a 12 mile ski to the Consolation Lakes, which lie in the valley below.
Getting There
To get to Mt. Quadra, ski the Moraine Lake road (closed in winter) from Lake Louise. The road is groomed for skiing most of the way in winter, stopping short of a prominent avalanche chute, about 2 miles from Moraine Lake. Once you reach the lake, take the well defined trail to Consolation Lakes, which lie below Mt. Quadra. 4 - 6 hours depending on conditions.
