Description
The northern half of the state of Karnataka contains a surprising variety of rock type compared the the rest of South India, which is dominated by Deccan granite. The southwestern parts of this region feature the deathly sharp and mostly unclimbable Yana limestone. Northeast from Yana lie the beautiful red sandstone canyons of Badami, a sport climbing playground that also has plenty of "developed" and undeveloped trad. Further east, and a little south, is magical Hampi, with millions of fingertip shredding granite boulders as far as the eye can see, with a streak of dark basalt running through it.
Getting There
Hampi is a popular destination for international travellers, and can be reached by bus (and sometimes by train) from all major cities in the southern part of India (Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad) and from other popular tourist destinations like Goa and Gokarna. Buses and trains to Badami run from Mumbai and Bangalore.
