Abiathar Peak (Ice)

Wyoming > Yellowstone NP

Description

Abiathar Peak (10,928') sits prominently across and east of its better known neighbor, Barronette Peak. It is located in the northeastern section of Yellowstone National Park and is in the Absaroka mountain range. The peak was named in honor of Charles Abiathar White, a geologist and paleontologist who had participated in early surveys of the area. A number of ice climbs grace Abiathar's south and northwest faces. Most of the routes can be found in avalanche prone gullies with the exception of Hydromonster, which forms in a relatively safe location. The northwest face is bisected by several gully systems and associated creeks which will aid most climbers in locating and approaching the various lines.

Getting There

There are only a few places along highway 212 where you should park to access the climbs. When driving northbound on 212 these would be the Lower Barronette pullout, Barronette Peak pullout and the Upper Barronette Peak pullout. Confusing? I wouldn't argue with you but that is how they are referred and yes, you use these pullouts to access the routes on Abiathar Peak. Individual routes descriptions will recommend which pullout to use for the approach.

If you zero your odometer at the Lower pullout then you can use the chart below to find the distance to the various gully systems on Abiathar Peak.
