Description
Big mountainous state south of Arizona, west of Chihuahua, north of Sinaloa. Vast climbing potential but very little development save for a few very nice sport crags near Hermosillo.
Hermosillo is the capital and epicenter, and has most everything you could need from a modern city, except for really specialized climbing gear. There's an excellent bouldering gym there, GRID, and they can give you all the beta for Sonora; they also have a decent selection of basic gear (shoes, draws, harnesses, ropes) for sale.

Getting There
If coming from the US, heading south from Tucson through Nogales is the most common way. Hermosillo also has an international airport. Basaseachi(El Gigante, etc) is just to the east over the border in Chihuahua state.
If entering Sonora from the US with a US vehicle there is no hassle with registering your car as long as you stay in the western and northern part of the state (from Guaymas north to Nogales and points west of there; also Agua Prieta to Douglas) because this is a special economic "hassle free zone" trying to encourage tourism by reducing bureaucratic regulation, the same system used in all of Baja California. If you go into eastern or southern Sonora you'll need to get your vehicle registered with a temporary importation permit.
