Description
Ramanagara (or Ramanagaram, or Ramnagara) is a town about 50 km southwest of Bangalore, along the highway to Mysore. It has a large number of granite domes peppered around it, with climbs ranging from one to seven pitches in length.
Formerly a taluk (province) within the greater Bangalore district, since 2007 Ramanagara is a district by itself. The four taluks (each of which was a taluk of Bangalore district formerly) that comprise Ramanagara as we know today are:
1. Ramanagara town (which covers most of the popular sport crags and hills such as Achalu, Madhepurggudda, Mother Wall, Ramadevara Betta, within 10kms, 20 mins drive from Ramanagara bus stand)
2. Magadi (which includes Savandurga)
3. Kanakapura (includes Ravugoldu, Kabbalu, BM Betta and Kanakapura Achalu)
4. Channapatna
Getting There
Take the Mysore Highway from Bangalore (see map). There are also trains every hour that go from Bangalore and Mysore with stops at Ramanagara. It's a roughly one hour train ride and about 45 minutes by car from Bangalore city limits. If riding the train, many climbs are near enough that one can ride an auto-rickshaw to the crag. Some crags (Achalu, for instance) can also be reached by a local bus from Ramanagara. Most crags are no more than a 15-minute drive from the town center). Approaches from the road are 5 to 20 minutes long.
