Peilstein

International > Europe > Austria > Niederösterreich

Description

The largest and most popular climbing area in the Vienna woods (Wienerwald), Peilstein has routes for every climbing ability.

Climbing is on limestone and the area has been popular for nearly 100 years.

1400 routes spread over 4 different locations:

Peilstein Hauptwände (Peilstein main wall)

  • The main event. Large west facing crag spread out from North to South. 26 different sectors with a variety of grades ranging from easy to hard 5.13. By far, the bulk of the climbing is here.

Thalhofergrat

  • Main crag located nearly over the road. 12 sectors and a nice grade spread. Most likely the second most popular area next to the main wall of Peilstein.

Arnstein

  • 5 sectors and a bunch of small crags spread out from north to south. Some steeper hard routes look protected from rain.

Holzschlag

  • Smaller crags consisting of around 11 blocks scattered in the woods.

Season:

Ranging in elevation from 600 to 716 meters, routes in the sun might be a bit hot for middle of summer. Winter could be too cold. Main climbing season from April to October.

Lodging:

The area is close enough to Vienna, that, a day trip could be easily done especially if lodging is procured on the southwest side of town.

Locally, the Peilsteinhaus is located nearly on top of the main Peilstein wall. 20 to 40 minute walk from the parking lot at Schwarzensee. Dorm style (60 spaces) and private rooms.

Peilsteinhütte (30 capacity hut open on weekends year round) is located at 640m on the way to Peilsteinhaus from Schwarzensee.

Gasthaus am Holzschlag and Schutzhaus am Holzschlag are local lodging options located nicely near the main Peilstein wall.

Several hotel options in nearby towns.

Camping Wienerwald is around a half hour drive away. Camping Paradies Garden is around 20 minutes.

Note: "wild camping" is forbidden in this area.
