Slocan Lake Bluffs

International > N America > Canada > British Columbia > Kootenays > W Kootenays > Slocan Valley

Description

The Slocan Bluffs are an collection of walls located right next to beautiful Slocan Lake. With zero approach, a wide variety of grades and a truly gorgeous view this place is not to be missed. The main area stretches along an old road next to the lake for about 1km. There are several smaller areas just above the main trail as well as a group of walls much higher up that are accessed via the highway above town.

Getting There

These lakeside sport climbs require one of the shortest approaches in British Columbia. The local guidebook states: "It's probably one of the only areas in British Columbia that's wheelchair accessible."

The crags are located at the town of Slocan, British Columbia; on the east side of Slocan Lake. Not really in the Valhallas but easily visited on trips to the Valhallas. The Bluffs are less than a mile from either the town's campground or swimming beach. Park on the east side of Slocan's defunct lumber mill and walk in along the old paved road. 80 routes are listed in the West Kootenay Rock Guide (Hempsall & Kritiansen @ climbing.inthekoots.com).

[Hide Comment] Warning!!! Lots of loose rock. Had a terrifying experience 12m up ‘Sahara’, a boulder the size of my torso dislodging whilst all my weight was on it, tore clean through my rope, shattered into pieces on the path below inches from my belaying wife. Watch out, test everything no matter the size, and stay safe!! Left some gear up there too for whoever retrieves/please donate to local climbing school :) Sep 27, 2023
