Description
Climbing:
The Dutzow Boulder problems are SANDSTONE. It has been visited and re-visited through time by climbers walking the tracks and then biking down the trail. Names were never given to the random ascents, through the years, but the trail side boulder and sandstone exposure still remains a great stopping point for those traveling the Katy Trail by bike or foot.
Some would say that the area is nothing to drive out of your way for, but there are a number of good problems nevertheless. Over 30 plus routes are set so far. The main wall, north of the Dutzow Boulder, is known as the Devil's Den and is perfect for top roping and short leads, if you are not into doing high ball lines. Some anchoring trees and cracks exist above so bring a short rope and webbing if top roping is for you!
Weather:
Although the routes are solid they should be approached cautiously through the changing seasons. Wet weather can cause unwanted conditions, so visit during the dry seasons. Fall is particularly perfect. During the rainy seasons, the lower area can be entrenched with water, hence the picture. Expect increased foliage during late spring though the summer months. Again, careful of poison ivy during the summer, but increased users have diminished this issue. In the past, the main boulder would again be almost completely covered by vines when revisiting the following fall but that is no longer the case (2020).
History:
Sept - Oct 1993.
Boulder is cleared of vines for a great find! Lots of fun and a perfect stopping point during a ride from St. Charles to Columbia, MO. Sandstone quality was notably better than other exposures as close to the Missouri River level and softer layers further east along the trail towards St. Charles. The year of 1993 was a particularly difficult time to travel the Katy Trail, due to major flooding and damaged trail sections, but the exciting finds made the ride worthwhile along the way.
Thanks for posting the Dutzow Boulder to share with other trail travelers. Marcus Floyd
September 2015.
Bouldering area was revisited by Nick Richards and routes slowly made their way to mountain project. Route names were inspired by the nearby winery. Vines had regrown and fully matured on the slab side at first approach. Along with an immense amount of moss, thorns, and poison ivy. He continues to maintain the area by adding routes, leveling out fall zones, and clearing out vegetation every year around the beginning of fall. Follow the journey :)

Getting There
Take Hwy 47 or 94, towards Washington, MO, to Dutzow, MO, near the Washington Airport. There is a large parking lot, off of the Katy Trail, in front of a small store, just less than 1/2 mile northwest of the bouldering area by trail. Hike east along the Katy Trail and keep your eyes open on the left. The winery sign and trail head is nearby, just east of the Dutzow Boulder and available to park bikes. If you passed the Blumenhof sign then you just past the boulders.
Remember to visit the winery afterwards and not before (wine tastings are free w/ live music during fall and spring). Please be respectful of private property nearby, be weary of cyclists, and clean up after yourself. "Leave no trace".
