Description Suggest change

Causey climbing is most well known for it's hard routes on high quality limestone. Causey is also home to some of the only deep water soloing in the Wasatch Front. Generally speaking, the deep water soloing tends to be fairly easy and well suited to beginners, whereas the route climbing is generally for the 5.12 and up climbers. There are a few routes that are easier than 5.12, but the selection is quite limited and the easier routes generally aren't worth the approach time in my opinion.

The deep water soloing is obviously found right on Causey Reservoir and is mostly located in the Skull Crack Canyon portion of the reservoir. The route climbing is located up Wheat Grass Canyon which is reached by parking just before the Camp Kiesel Boy Scout facility.

From the parking, cross a bridge over the stream/reservoir, and following the trail northeast into the canyon. The first bolted routes are found at the Hair Dog Wall which is approximately 15 minutes from the trailhead. The Kamacausey Wall is located another 10 minutes up the trail just past where there is a fork in the canyon (wheat grass canyon is the left fork). The next area encountered is the Serendipity wall after hiking another 15 minutes up Wheat Grass Canyon. High up the hillside above Serendipity wall is the Stepping Wolves wall, and 5 minutes further up canyon from Serendipity is the Vampire Cave. Wheat Grass Canyon also holds an additional area, The Dragons Lair, but this area is accessed by parking at the Bluebell Spring trailhead at the top of Wheat Grass Canyon.

Getting There Suggest change

Causey Reservoir is located above the town of Huntsville on the way to Monte Cristo. Get to Huntsville by heading up Ogden Canyon or taking trappers loop by Snow Basin to Pine View Reservoir. Go around the south side of the reservoir and you will end up in Huntsville.

Once in Huntsville turn east onto highway 39 towards Monte Cristo and drive 8.4 miles to the marked right turn that takes you to Causey Reservoir. For the deep water soloing turn right across the dam and park in the first parking area, for the route climbing stay on FR20139 without crossing the dam until the road ends at Camp Kiesel and park outside of the gate to the camp.

For the Dragons Lair, continue on highway 39 for 14.8 miles past the Causey Reservoir turn off then turn right onto FR 20201 and park at the end of the dirt road and the trail head for Bluebell spring.
