Description

Lizard Lake climbing is a great destination to beat the crowds and find climbing solitude in a beautiful place. With the Low Hanging Fruit wall close by, there is plenty of climbing for a whole weekend. The rock here is your typical, steep-to-overhanging, Crystal River special order. The climbs here are new and have seen little traffic, so climb cautiously, stay on the established route, and wear a helmet. Any brushing and blowing off of holds would be much appreciated. It is incredibly sunny and warm around Lizard Lake. Once the wall comes into the sun in the late morning, it is in the sun for the rest of the day. In the summer, I suggest climbing in the morning, on a cloudy day or evening. It is possible to climb at Lizard Lake late into the fall.

Getting There

Drive through downtown Marble, CO continuing on CR 3 which will turn to dirt after Beaver Lake. Continue up Daniel’s Hill turning right towards the town of Crystal and Schofield Pass. The right will take you down a steep hill which is only wide enough for one vehicle at a time. Cross a small bridge at the bottom of the hill, and continue to Lizard Lake on bumpy road. Subarus have made it down here, but higher clearance is strongly recommended. Park at North end or South end of Lizard Lake. I prefer the south end approach. Gain obvious trail that circles Lizard Lake. After a couple minutes, you will take a right just before large boulders at water’s edge. Follow climber’s trail to base of cliff. From Lizard Lake, the approach is about 5 minutes. It is possible to park just before taking the right towards Crystal. There is limited parking in this area. It only adds 10 minutes onto the approach and saves a lot of wear and tear on your vehicle.
